Construction Update

Here's an update on our major construction projects.

  • The Watson Center, which will house our Film and TV Production program, is scheduled for completion in December 2019/January 2020, with an expected occupancy date of mid-spring 2020.
  • The Technology Center--the future home of Business, Computer Science, Paralegal, the Sheriff's office, and our Information Technology operations--should be ready for occupancy in late summer 2020.  A new resident of the building will be the Welcome Center, which will move from the fourth floor of the Student Services Building to the "front door" of the campus--the first floor of the TLC.  Westside Extension, to whom this space was originally assigned, will maintain its current location in Fine Arts until our conversations about our Measure CC project have concluded.  In these dialogues, we will ensure that Westside Extension is assigned office space that is conveniently located to serve the community.
  • After stops, starts, unexpected delays, and unforeseen layers of bureaucracy, we are finally on track with the demolition of the sound wall.  Currently, potential contractors are reviewing the job site and submitting bids.  The actual process of demolition is scheduled to begin in early October and is projected to be completed in December.  Next spring, Freshman Drive will be re-paved.
On another note, this fall we will undertake a very important conversation regarding our Measure CC project--the construction of a new library/student union.  In October, the Building Users' Group, as well as other campus constituencies, will begin working with a yet-to-be-determined architectural firm to program the building; i.e., to identify the functions that will be assigned to the building, to establish the adjacency of functions to provide optimum service to students, etc.

Please remember, too, that our Measure CC project also includes a reconfiguration of the Fine Arts Building, a renovation of the fourth floor of Student Services, some minor reconfigurations in Math/Science A, construction of a new greenhouse, and the demolition of eleven buildings:  Bungalows A9, B1, B4, B5, B7, B12, the old Science Center, Career Education A, Career Education B, the greenhouse, and the HLRC/Library.

So we have a lot to discuss over the coming year regarding the future direction of our facilities--and the entire campus environment.
