This spring, more than 1150 individual visits have been made to the West Pantry, and more than 750 students have benefited from the West Wardrobe. All these visits occurred in only nine hours per week and just since the beginning of the spring semester.
I want you to take a moment to let these numbers sink in.
Consider that we, as a community of educators, have been able to temporarily address hunger so that our students can be more focused and more productive in class. We have helped them to not worry about a meal--at least for a while. Through the services provided in the Wardrobe, students have been able to receive such basic items as shoes and undergarments and have assembled total outfits. They leave the Wardrobe with the positive self-image that occurs when they are proud of their appearance.
Each of these students, when they visit the Pantry and the Wardrobe, arrive with their own stories. To talk with them and to witness their strength, their resilience, and their dedication to attaining their academic goals confirms that our efforts to meet students' basic needs truly support our vision to be a "gateway of success for every student."
The Pantry and the Wardrobe illustrate the impact of what a community can do when it comes together in pursuit of a common goal, and the success of our outreach could not have happened without the combined efforts and commitment of volunteers, community organizations, and West faculty, staff, and students. Our sincere thanks to each of you for your contributions to the well-being of our students.
