May is National Foster Care Month. Here at West, we recognize the unique challenges faced by our students who are currently or who have been in the foster care system. Our Next Up initiative, coordinated by Maria Mancia as an integral part of the College's EOPS program, provides support services for this important student cohort.
For those of us who may not be aware of the particular obstacles that former foster youth face in college, I recommend this article, "Foster Care Youth and Postsecondary Education: The Long Road Ahead," for it provides an excellent overview of issues foster youth deal with, often on a daily basis.
To that end, I encourage you to attend a special program entitled "It's not Drama--It's Trauma," scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, noon-1 p.m., in SSB 414. EOPS/Next Up is kindly providing lunch, so be sure to RSVP before Tuesday, May 21, to WLAC-Guardscho@laccd.edu.
