Site Recommendation: New Library/Student Center

As you know, the construction of a new library/student union will result in a massive amount of change to the physical appearance of our campus, as we demolish twelve older buildings (including the current library) and replace them with one building that will function as a center for student learning and student socialization.

To arrive at a location, and under the auspices of the Facilities Committee, a series of five (5) meetings were held with the campus community and Building User Group (BUG) to come to consensus regarding the optimal location for the site of the new Heldman Learning Resource Center (HLRC) to be constructed using Measure CC funds.

Each group meeting reached the same conclusion: to locate the new HLRC on the proposed site location A (see image below).  This site was recommended to the Facilities Committee. The Facilities Committee has adopted this recommendation and has forwarded to the College Council for presentation to the campus president.

The next steps are to engage the services of an architecture firm to do the programming of the new building (determining who and what goes into the new space). They will work with the existing Building User Group (BUG) along with any other constituent groups impacted by the plan. New meetings will not begin until Fall term in order to allow the district procurement process for contracts to take place, and for the campus to again reach out to the campus community for membership on the BUG.
