OER and West: Good News!

Here's an example of the many efforts being made by our faculty and staff to help our students attain their educational goals by reducing the costs of college.

Eric Ichon, Dean of Academic Services who holds responsibility for distance learning, forwarded the following announcement:

I've been working on our OER [Open Educational Resources] grant progress report and I am pleased to inform you that we were able to use our $24,500 grant to save students over half a million dollars in textbook costs since last fall!  This is almost twice what we initially projected and we aren't done yet."

This is great news for our students, and I want to thank Eric, Cyrus Helf, and all the faculty who have embraced OER as another way to help our students.

If you're not sure of the scope of online educational resources, here's a basic overview provided by the California Community College Chancellor's Office. An exhaustive review of the concept is available through the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges.

An update to this post:  Eric has provided further information on the program's success, noting that
"Over 3,500 students saved over $515,000 in 90 sections including courses in Art, Business, English, Communication Studies, Computer Science, Economics, Management and Theater from Fall 2018 – Fall 2019.  This doesn’t include the savings for courses that adopted OER prior to Fall 2018."
