Update: AB 302 (the Parking Lot Bill)

By now, you've all heard about AB 302:  the proposed legislation that would require all California community colleges to allow any homeless student to park overnight on a designated parking lot.  Since its introduction last year, there have been two exemptions added; i.e., an individual campus does not have to provide parking if

  • the parking facility is located within 250 feet of an elementary school; or
  • if the district provides at least one of the following services:
    • emergency grants that are necessary to secure or prevent the imminent loss of housing,
    • hotel vouchers through a public agency or community organization, or
    • rapid rehousing referral services.
As of this writing, AB 302 is in the Senate's inactive fill.  The author (Marc Berman [D], representing the 24th District) has indicated that he work on refining the amendments.

Therefore, any rumors you may heard regarding imminent implementation of this bill are incorrect, in that it has not been voted into law.
